Discover the Secret History of World War Two in Achtung! Cthulhu

Discover the Secret History of World War Two in Achtung! Cthulhu

achtung-cthulhu-smallOn Tuesday, I talked about the latest crop of exciting fantasy games I’ve discovered, with the help of The Paris Fashion Week of Fantasy Games. They included recent supplements for CthulhuTech, the game of Cthulhu versus giant robots, and Incursion, an intriguing mash-up of BattleTech and Squad Leader.

Cthulhu, zombies, Nazi super-science, occult experiments… you’d think these two games alone would keep me completely content for the next decade. And they might have, too, if I hadn’t just discovered Modiphius Entertainment’s Achtung! Cthulhu.

Before you accuse me of having the attention span of a three-year-old, I’d like to point out that Achtung! Cthulhu combines all that stuff in one game.

Did you ever want to see what would happen if Sgt. Rock went toe-toe-toe with the minions of Nyarlathotep in Nazi Germany? If Indiana Jones stumbled on a nest of shuggoths in Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest at Berchtesgaden?

These are rhetorical questions; of course you did.

Achtung! Cthulhu is a tabletop roleplaying campaign that pits elite Allied soldiers against Chthonians, Deep Ones, Dimensional Shamblers, the Dark Young of Shub-Niggurath, and other creatures from H.P. Lovercraft’s Cthulhu mythos. It is fully compatible with Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu, and versions are in the works for Realms of Cthulhu (for Savage Worlds), Pelgrane Press’s Trail of Cthulhu, and the PDQ Core Rules from Atomic Sock Monkey.

The first series of adventures is called “Zero Point,” and so far two chapters have been published: Three Kings and Heroes of the Sea, both written by Black Gate‘s own Sarah Newton. The overall series is under the direction of Chris Birch.

Sarah’s most recent project was Mindjammer, the novel based on the far future transhuman space opera setting of the same name. We covered Mindjammer right here back in August.

Here’s the game description for Achtung! Cthulhu:

Discover the secret history of World War Two — stories of the amazing heroism which struggled to overthrow a nightmare alliance of science and the occult, of frightening inhuman conspiracies from the depths of time, and the unbelievable war machines which were the product of Nazi scientific genius — and how close we all came to a slithering end!

Play a huge range of classic wartime heroes such as Russian political officers, German U-Boat commanders, British commandoes, RAF pilots, US rangers, Washington investigators, London journalists, Hollywood starlets, and resistance fighters from all across Europe, who must all unite in the battle against the darker side of World War Two. Play a full campaign leading from the opening shots of the War in 1939, through intrigue and adventure in Occupied Europe, the siege of Berlin in 1945, and finally the cold wastes of Antarctica in 1946!

Featuring stunning art by illustrator Dim Martin and more artists to be announced, each Achtung! Cthulhu release will be packed full of evocative and inspirational scenes and is designed to be a totally standalone product letting you jump right in to tentacle fueled wartime adventures!

Achtung! Cthulhu will thrust your characters in to the midst of a dark and desperate struggle, as Cthulhu’s minions take advantage of the chaos wrought by the Third Reich to topple civilization! The massive world-spanning Achtung! Cthulhu setting features occult conspiracies, terrifying Nazi war machines, and an ancient evil so powerful that it threatens to tear the world apart!

They pretty much had me at “Nazis” and “Cthulhu,” but I like the hints of a long-range adventure campaign leading to a confrontation in “the cold wastes of Antarctica in 1946.”

The first installment of that campaign, Sarah Newton’s Three Kings, was published in PDF format earlier this year, both for Call of Cthulhu and Savage Worlds / Realms of Cthulhu:

Achtung! Cthulhu brings you a two-fisted wartime Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game setting packed full of fiendish Nazis, terrifying ancient mysteries, legendary war machines, and enough writhing tentacles to fill ten Reichstags!

Three Kings is the first in a series of standalone adventure supplements in the globe-spanning Zero Point campaign for Achtung! Cthulhu written by Sarah Newton. Join a band of heroic soldiers, agents, and partisans behind enemy lines on the eve of World War Two, as they discover the unspeakable horrors of Castle Karlstein in occupied Czechoslovakia!

Inside you will find everything you need:

  • A standalone multi-episode adventure for hours of play!
  • New rules for Call of Cthulhu wartime investigations
  • Maps of Europe, Czechoslovakia, Castle Karlstein, and the surrounding area
  • An “Operational Briefing” handout
  • Setting information on Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia
  • Packed full of inspiration artwork by Dim Martin
  • Four pregenerated characters to get you playing immediately!

achtung-cthulhu-heroes-of-the-sea-smallThree Kings was followed in October by Heroes of the Sea:

Heroes of the Sea is the second standalone adventure supplement in the globe-spanning Zero Point campaign from Sarah Newton.

Play soldiers, agents, and resistance fighters in the chaos and carnage of the Battle of Dunkirk, as a sinister conspiracy threatens the lives of the retreating Allied forces! Inside you will find everything you need:

  • A standalone 63 PAGE multi-episode adventure for several sessions of play!
  • New rules for wartime investigations, including tanks and Stukas!
  • Maps of Europe & the evacuation of Dunkirk by Michal E Cross
  • An “Operational Briefing” and many other beautiful handouts!
  • Four pre-generated characters to get you playing immediately!

Achtung! Cthulhu requires the 6th edition Call of Cthulhu rulebook to play (they promise the Realms of Cthulhu, Trail of Cthulhu, and PDQ versions are forthcoming). Both Three Kings and Heroes of the Sea are available in two different versions (Call of Cthulhu and Savage Worlds / Realms of Cthulhu).

Three Kings is available for $9.99 as a watermarked PDF from RPG Now.

Heroes of the Sea is $14.99 for a 63-page watermarked PDF from RPGNow.

Titles are currently available in PDF only. But once the series is complete, the entries will be compiled into an omnibus print edition.
