The Big Book of Science Fiction-smallI’ve covered a handful of truly massive anthologies at Black Gate over the years — Otto Penzler’s The Vampire Archives and The Big Book of Adventure Stories spring to mind, as well as Ann and Jeff Vandermeer’s 1152-page The Weird — but I’m not sure I’ve ever come something as hugely ambitious as The Big Book of Science Fiction, edited by the Vandermeers, and scheduled to be released by Vintage this July.

Weighing in at 1,216 pages in oversized trade paperback, this could be one of the largest anthologies the genre has seen. Here’s the description.

So I’ll queue up this and The Weird and set my Goodreads goal to 2 books/year, and feel a real sense of accomplishment if I hit my target.

Also kind of hope they do something similar for fantasy. Or can you imagine a sword & sorcery anthology from them?

John, do you know have any more information on what factors informed this anthology?

In The Weird the Vandermeers were clearly trying to give a historically informed perspective of the genre while highlighting, not only influential stars but, figures and works that they thought had been ignored, typically non-Anglo or non-Western writers. I think they were successful in doing so in The Weird.

But I don’t know enough about SF to comment on whether this list is attempting to do something similar.

James — I believe that’s the case (bringing in overlooked works). The anthology has been discussed on at least a couple recent episodes of the Coode Street Podcast.

but anthologies have to be limited in some fashion or other.
It looks like quite an impressive mix. I’m looking forward to it.

Yeah, even a 1200 page monster doesn’t have room for everything; and there were probably some authors that they would’ve liked to include but were unable to secure the rights.
