Good Grief “Gamer Bros” Are Exhausting – A Very Annoyed Opinion

Goodafterevenmorn, Readers!

I’m still in the world of video games. I’d rather not be. I’m gearing up for a book release right now. I’d much rather be talking about that. But the gaming news is slamming itself into my algorithm at the moment, and I need to talk about it. This isn’t happening in a vacuum, but is the same damned thing that happens every time a game that doesn’t feature a straight dude comes out; primarily giant man-babies throwing public tantrums because there is a toy in the world they don’t want to play with and how dare anyone make something that doesn’t appeal to them specifically. There are so many cases of this, but the big one right now belongs to the latest installment of the God of War franchise. Let’s dive in, shall we?

First, I need to come clean with my history with gaming, and this franchise in particular. I wasn’t a gamer in my youth. I really wanted to be, but I grew up in the time when video games were for boys, and also I was not in possession of enough funds to buy a gaming PC or console, and certainly not to buy games on the regular. I got into gaming quite late in life, when my younger brother, who is a gamer and works in the industry, very kindly bought me a PS4 (Play Station 4, in case there’s anyone here who doesn’t know). And it was off to the races, so to speak.

For a time, video games were, for me, some of the best story writing I’ve come across in a while; an excellent medium for exploring worlds and tales, sometimes moving me to tears (seriously, the ending of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice had me ugly sobbing live on stream) in a time when I couldn’t, for whatever reason, settle into the written word in the same way I used to (that has since been remedied, thank goodness). The God of War franchise soon earnt its place amongst my favourite stories with their reimagining that happed with the 2018 release.

Before that, the games were fun, but did very little for me otherwise. The character of Kratos was one-note, and as such, incredibly boring. What was fun about the game was the cool weapons and puzzles, and the awesome moves you could do with certain weapons. The story tried to be impactful, but with the shallow avatar of rage that was the character, I was not overly moved. Granted, this is me — a slightly older woman. Your mileage may vary.

Kratos then vs Kratos now. Image courtesy of exputer.com

However, the 2018 game reimagined Kratos as a character. He is older now. A father. And in mourning for his wife – a woman he clearly loved dearly. His relationship with his son is strained. We learn later that it’s not because he does not love his son, but that he fears the burdens his own godhood would lay at his child’s feet. He fears the weight of the cycle of godhood he knows — that father will kill his children, or the son will murder his father. Both are painful. Both will bring harm to the murderer; a harm Kratos knows all too well. He, after all, is a god-killer. He, after all, slaughtered his siblings and his own father. It is a guilt and a pain he carries and will carry for the rest of his very long life.

The game, ostensibly, is about fulfilling Kratos’ wife’s last request – to scatter her ashes from the tallest peak in all the nine realms. But that’s not really what the game is about. Over the course of the 2018 game, we witness the slow unbinding of Kratos’ reserve. The unwinding of his own childhood education in favour of something kinder; we witness the slow inexorable victory of love over fear.

Though Kratos remains a stern disciplinarian, we watch as he bonds with his son, learning through his child’s own heart that the cycle need not repeat — if we just make the effort to brake its binds. We start the game too afraid to offer the child any physical comfort. By the end, that is gone, and the father-son bond is made strong. Kratos goes from calling his child “boy” to using his name — Atreus. Physical comfort is offered as easily as a thought. It’s a beautiful story.

This was such a huge moment at the end of the game (2018)

I should note that I have a very soft spot for the “sad dad” genre of games (see also: The Last of Us). There’s just something magical about watching grown men unlearn the things that keep them from a kinder, fuller life.

Kratos is not done unlearning, though. We see him confront his past further in God of War: Ragnarok, the second installation in the new franchise. And we watch him be taught by his son – Atreus’ goodness seeps into Kratos. He realises that he had been trying to teach his son the wrong thing – that hardening your heart against suffering isn’t the way to go. He is still a god-killer.

But he is not only a god-killer. This is particularly noticeable in his final confrontation with Thor. Though they fight, Kratos continually tries to get through to the god of thunder with words. In the end, he chooses not to kill Thor, who is struggling with the same guilt as Kratos and has nowhere to bury his pain but in drink and killing. As he notes to Thor, “For the sake of our children, we must be better.”

Please excuse me while I melt. Thanks.

We also learn in the first game that Kratos’ wife, who we know as Fey, had her own secrets.

She was not just the woman Kratos fell in love with, but the best hunter he ever knew, and an extremely skilled warrior in her own right. Their first encounter was violent, and the god-killer failed to gain victory against her. She fought Thor to a standstill. And — spoiler warning — we learn that she was, in fact, a giant and had foreseen the journey Kratos and his son would undertake in the fulfilment of her last wish and indeed laid the way ahead of time. Her secrets and abilities are a wide-open and fertile field for some excellent narrative and character exploration.

And that’s just what Santa Monica studios did. They have announced the next game in the franchise: God of War: Laufey.

Most of you familiar with the gaming world will immediately predict what happened next. For those of you not involved in that world, let me explain:

A bunch of man-babies started throwing fits.

Some of the arguments might be excusable (a God of War game without Kratos?!) were it not for the broader context of the gaming world. Yet other expressions of outrage drip with such idiocy I have very nearly put my own eyes out rolling them so hard.

So, to the first – a God of War game without Kratos? Yes. It exists in the world of the God of War franchise. It centers on the woman Kratos loved, the mother of his child, and person with many skills and many more secrets. She a fascinating, kick-arse character, and she deserves to have her story explored. As it takes place in the world of the franchise bearing the name God of War, concerning a character whose last wish was the entire motivation for the 2018 game, there’s no logical reason whatsoever to do anything other than name it as such. Getting one’s knickers in a twist over the title seems silly… and probably just a cover for the real reason someone might be upset.

The more aggravating hissy fits are what you might expect. A video game with a female protagonist?! No way! A female protagonist that looks like a person?! Gross!

Streamer Asmongold (didn’t know he existed until now) is quoted as saying, “No one wants to play a character that looks like a 43 year old suburban mom.” My dude… beloved… that’s *exactly* what I want. Give me a grown woman kicking arse mid-air with magic and a sword? Count me TF in! Beyond which, Laufey is stunning! She’s a looker!

What’s the issue here? It’s like saying Charlize Theron was rubbish in Mad Max: Fury Road, or The Old Guard. I’m sorry. You’re just wrong. Also, the age of Kratos was never an issue. He’s an old man in the new games. He, apparently, isn’t a cradle robbing creep. How dare he fall in love with a woman of comparable age… or something? How is Laufey’s age an issue, but Kratos is not? I’d give you three guesses, but its painfully obvious.

You cannot convince me that this woman is anything other than beautiful.

In fact, Laufey’s appearance has come up more than once. More than one corner of the fits being thrown have mentioned her age or her appearance. Or both. This is not a new issue in the gaming world. When the second Horizon Zero Dawn game was announced, the lead character, Aloy, got the same backlash. We even had a bunch of bros utilising AI (probably) to create “better” character models… which is to say, turn her into a make-up wearing super model.

As we all know, make-up would be super easy to come by in a post-apocalyptic, robot-filled world. And of course, she would have the time each morning to apply a full face. Let’s be for so real, you can’t go running around outside and shooting arrows without having applied make-up first. Man, I wish there was a way to easily convey dripping sarcasm in text.

Apparently, *some* men can’t possibly play a female protagonist unless — and please excuse the crudeness of this statement — she’s a pin-up they can easily fap to.

There are other ‘arguments’ that people have made. Largely that the game doesn’t look good and… my guy… did we watch the same game footage? Did we see the same combat example? The woman fights midair with a sword and magic!

These aren’t arguments at all. They’re bad faith excuses used to cover up the fact that the knee-jerk reaction to a female protagonist was instant dislike. Introspection is hard, but try. Perhaps next time something like this comes out, you won’t look like a bunch of overgrown toddlers who have sighted a passifier not for them.

Existing in this space as a woman is exhausting, to be frank. Every time there’s a cool thing happening, an interesting side-character who happens to be a woman gets her own game, and gets to be an absolute badass, there’s always a chorus of very loud Richard craniums who cry foul. It’s “woke” for whatever that means. Where’s their big, burly power fantasy? Why isn’t this particular game made with their myriad fantasies in mind? Ugh.

It’s all so vapid. The idiocy of it burns. If a game doesn’t appeal to you, then don’t buy it. Stop screaming about how girls are icky and don’t belong in whatever world the people who made the damned game obviously believe they belong in. You have every other game in this franchise. Let us have this without us having to deal with you drowning in your crocodile tears.

I, for one, am really excited for this game. And I only wish I could buy a PS5 today in anticipation of getting said game.

Also, I should note that this idiocy is not shared by all gamer guys. There are a lot of blokes out there that are excited for this game, thinks it looks great, and are looking forward to playing it themselves. Gentlemen, we can be friends. You seem cool. I’m sorry that your fellows are such twits that they’ve irked me so. I’m not mad at you. Just them.

God of War: Laufey looks like it’s going to be so much fun, and Laufey herself is cool as hell. Santa Monica Studios has not really missed when it comes to the (recent) stories of this franchise, so I’m anticipating enjoying that as well.

Now go away. I have to go sell a kidney so I can get my console.

Yeah, “exhausting” doesn’t even begin to cover it, and I say that as a straight, white guy myself.

There’s still a loud vocal minority that says that? Huh. I guess everyone draws a line in the sand somewhere. To the holders of that particular opinion, I say, “I don’t agree with your opinion, but will fight to the death for your right to express it, with the caveat that I look forward to a day you get told ‘you have the right to remain silent’ or ‘anything you say will be given in evidence.'”

And to think, each class I started playing in Diablo was the female one. Never played dress up sorry. I just wanted to see her kick everyone’s rear end all the way to the end.

I assume that as soon as they finish their Goddess of War screed, they start typing up a “Why don’t we have Straight Pride Month?” post.

Eh… and there’s my personal line in the sand. As a hyphenated-American who’s long been denied an official identity celebration date because of a skin color I “can’t help,” I’m of the opinion that if we’re celebrating one group for an attribute that a given member “can’t help,” we either need to celebrate all groups or no groups. Awareness days? Great. Being happy and confident in oneself in spite of anything anyone else says? Great. But an elevation of a group on the basis of grouphood no-one “can help,” instead of accomplishments above-and-beyond? Not particularly great.

Let them opine. If there’s a connection between the two opinions, then there’s a connection. If there’s not a connection between the two opinions, then there’s not.

(By the way: Big fan of your medieval chicken-rider icon. Love those things.)

I haven’t played a video game since college and those were in arcades so this world exists pretty far outside of my own. I have had to deal with gamer bros on various occasions and most of the ones I’ve encountered were the same kind of pathetic basement dwellers you’ve described here.
While I do think game playing in general draws a vocal chunk of developmentally challenged people there are obviously a lot of mature, functioning adults like yourself for whom this is a way to vent steam and get one’s head out of the often overwhelming awfulness that is the real world we live in these days.
It seems to me that the problem here is much the same as with all forms of fandom where a mentally and emotionally arrested (and very loud) segment of the audience entrenches itself within the fanbase and defines itself as the gatekeepers. This has been going on for ages and not just in pop culture. I used to manage a record store back in the day and music people were the same (don’t get me started on jazz nazis, classical trolls or hipster assholes). Ditto my bookstore experience and we all know how bad that crowd has gotten.
As someone who has had to move into a more solitary lifestyle to preserve his sanity after the last 15 years (thank god for cats) I don’t have any solutions to offer. I really don’t know how any sane person can deal with the swarming, ranting masses. Avoiding any social media without moderators to bounce these kind of idiots to the curb might be the best course provided you can find such a place. I wish you luck.

Sing it, Byron!

I have yet to get my head around the gameplay of God of War IV. Seriously lacking in gaming skills. Can’t get oast second stage. Better make some effort so I can catch up and have a crack at this really cool sounding new installment! Oh and I suppose I will need a PS V as well.

I don’t game, but this reminds me of why I tend to stay far away from almost all current cultural products: I refuse to be an unpaid worker in a Culture War ammunition factory.

There’s a cool cartoon I saw I’d post it if I could – nothing explicit – just a lady in a comic shop going “At last our crusade has been realized. We got the comic company and the movie company to take that ridiculous lady superhero from like the 40s out of her awful costume and make something more practical…!” – to avoid copyright/DMCA abuse the cartoonist made it generic but obviously Wonder Woman with the recent Gal Godot movie… Another man is in the comic shop with her and says, “Well, are you going to buy it, then?” The lady laughs “Ahahaha! Like I’d waste any of MY money on this ….bleeep…!” contemptuously flinging the comic book and walking out.

You gave the line “Don’t like it? Don’t BUY it.” – well I agree with you. The issue we “knuckle draggers” aka men who like to save the princesses and go “Shake it, Baby!” to the exotic dancer we save from aliens – uh is “Bro” the term like “Punk” for EVERY genre of fiction? The issue we’ve had is not “Gurrrl Gaymez” or other representation. If someone had made a game for women or LGBTQ+ people and been banned we’d have been protesting for their freedom of speech and a free market. Our problem is that it seems like they or the big companies can’t make products that stand on their own. So they take OVER existing products and “Force Change”. Serious, “You gotta force change” that’s a direct quote from Larry Fink the CEO of Blackrock a “Private Equity” behind most of this … “Modern Audience” en shottification going on. Hmm, why would a giant private equity buy in, force “Change” and watch the stock tumble…? Have you heard of “Short-Selling”, boys and girls…? When you make something appeal to everyone, BUT the core audience, who does it appeal to? Answer, NO ONE…

And yes, we don’t buy it and don’t even steal it. By and large we’ve found these modern products SUCK once the “Modern Audience” change comes in. The stories are surface only and make “Deathstalker” look like “Citizen Kane”. They can’t even make up any new characters and seem to always wipe out the redheads – that’s called “Ginger-Cide” what problem DO they have with redheads always turning them into something else? The games are awful – there was a recent one where it took like 500 GIGS on the computer, a $4000 range rig to run it greater than one FPS and it was full of Fugly Pronoun creatures lecturing you on Misgendering. Oh, and the graphics looked like PS3 era $5 shovelware…and that was KIND. And yes we did NOT buy it. Same with another game with flashy but non heroic proportioned FPS characters – $80 million the game was shut down in a week – because we did not like it we did not BUY it. So yeah, our “Fault” for not buying something made by people who HATE us because of color of skin, gender and culture…but wouldn’t anyone BUT the demographic of white male straight gamers buy it and it’d be a superseller and we’d not be missed?

You want games for women? MAKE them. I hope this new sensitive “God of War” does sell well to “Women” and whatever demographics, shame for all that work for nothing. How deep ARE the tip jars in Seattle / Portland coffeshops? But this isn’t the “Racing the Beam” days – neat book by MIT press and documentaries on how durn nightmarish it was to program for the 2600…! Way different now, with a little time anyone can go to Unity and buy assets and take a few easy courses and put together games even without AI that’ll turn it up a notch. By the perspective of an Xer kid we have a $8 million Cray Supercomputer on even a budget desktop or smartphone…! Or a mid 90s Silicon Graphics $100K workstation… And there’s tons of services out there to make your games. I’m mostly going Retro feel but might make some to promote some stories of mine – but note there’s all sorts of “Male Gaze” stuff on DLsite that also uses crypto so the payment processor bullies can’t force “Change” to appeal to everyone and therefore NO ONE.

BTW – for games I’ve played a LOT of Nova Drift, Utopia Must Fall, Atari 50th anniversary, Dark Castle remakes, Shantae games, Broken Reality, 198X… Go to DL site tons of “Knuckle Dragger” ones – Aster, Sinisistar 2, Unholy Disaster… I’m getting sick of high spec “AAA” games since well the energy of what they call the “Boomer Shooters” is gone and it’s just “How much $ can you spend on a computer!?” realism – but for the $ they try to appeal to everyone and thus no “Shake it, Baby!” edge it’s filed off… BTW – I loathe the neologism “Boomer Shooters” since REAL “Boomers” tended to not like video games, they liked Pinball or Pool or going “Ohm….!” in the park…

The situation in that cartoon you mentioned sure would be infuriating if it wasn’t an imaginary scenario somebody made up

Greengestalt

Such a thing to say considering the mass media for movies, tv, TTRPGs, video games and comic books has been raw Panderverse for the last decade.

And it started HERE, I don’t mean Black Gate but the “Traditional Publishing” industry when it went activist decades earlier vs publishing mostly what SOLD and catering to about every taste at least in experimental to keep relevant.

But you are trying to bait some kind of long, angry response. Go crawl off to twitter (now X) or something.

Sure!
You’ll have to use this site’s search since I can’t post links here – WordPress sites need to lock ALL links or “Spiders” (that IS the term, Dood) post tons of spam still so most admins including here, lock it so nobody but them can insert a link. This source is backed up by this OWN site OK’d by it’s admins! SO – go to the top right and in the search type “DAW Books” – Second result should be – Daughter of DAW: An Interview with Publisher Betsy Wollheim, Part I…

About halfway down she admitted after all these years she cancelled GOR books because she just didn’t like Mr. Norman or his works no matter they sold quite well vs all her “Feminist” trash. She also pumped up anything feminist or non-white way before modern media rammed it on everyone. Forward thinking I guess but you’d think a publisher would go “Well this sells, this doesn’t sell, we’ll experiment here…” and mostly publish what makes MONEY then try to push in carefully personal things now and again vs RAMMING personal preferences? This was from the 100% dead tree, minimum order 100K copies day…

While she protected us from Prof Norman’s “Gor” world she also boosted Marion Zimmer Bradley as the flagship author (Sword and Sorceress) taking over via smaller and smaller number of publishers the mostly Male power fantasy Sword and Sorcery world and she was very popular for a long time. I’d suggest looking up the book “The last closet: The Dark Side of Avalon” by her daughter, Moira Grayland… Hint, put in a picture of someone trying to prevent themselves from upchucking with their hand and failing… Hmm, they didn’t seem to talk about THAT issue in those interviews…

Long and short the shift to what we now call “Modern Audience” then “Woke” then a type of “Correctness” etc. way back in mass media WAS started by a handful of publishers ramming their own AGENDA and working out ways to block out things they just didn’t like. They lost a LOT of business doing it but the bigger you are the larger your corporate welfare is.

Spider

Ah yes, John Norman’s Gor series, famously an example of apolitical, non-agenda-driven fiction by an author uninterested in pushing an ideology. How could I have forgotten?

And yes, I know Marion Zimmer Bradley was a monster. It’s quite widely known at this point. If you want to take that fact and use it as an excuse to avoid the entirety of feminist thought, I suppose that’s your prerogative, but if I was a betting man I’d put a few bucks on your having made up your mind on the subject a good while before anything came out about her.

Greengestalt

Oh, there’s SO much more than just MZB being a monster. Again re- her daughter’s books and enough RL stuff proven I believe it. MZB was SUCH friends with the DAW Heiress I think (one man’s opinion) she was part of her “Coven” and did things… ALSO they clearly knew about her husband, assigning special guards to him. ALSO I found out recently that he was more than just a jealous husband of MZBs… Like they were both homo but were married to camouflage to a legit intolerant society… P3Do also now that society sees a difference.

Here’s another “Soooourrrce…!?”
Look up on YouTube – the channel “PulpMortem” – “Can the tarnished legacy of Marion Zimmer Bradley be redeemed?” – He went over how they covered for him, how Breen (her husband) wrote letters for the NAMbLA newsletter … And I don’t mean “North American Marlon Brando Look Alikes”… And how SUCK MZB’s stories are. She was ONLY likely popular just because she was a deep friend of the DAW heiress.

And there’s more implication in that than illegal / immoral actions. This was the flagship driving the publishing industry for sci-fi and fantasy. Lin Carter dies, Warren got cancer and his accountant ran with his $, they ran most of the show. And the guiding minds who GATEKEPT were these enablers and possibly worse…

Fast forward a few decades, it seems the EPSTEIN slime is DEEP and has tentacles about everywhere. This was obviously a precursor and now we have people who are being kept out of the news but high positions of power in the entertainment and publishing industry being tied to this. If the real connections get fully mapped I bet it’ll be real nasty…

pete johnsen

Hey, let’s not just look past the good part here, “gearing up for a book release right now”! Congratulations!
