but even the bad stuff sometimes will have a tiny glimmer of something interesting in it

I don't doubt that's true.

What's also true is that many of those creating the most flawed gems only do so because they are at the beginning of their journey as writers and that some of them will one day blaze across the heavens while the rest of us can only look on in awe.

But *I* don't want to have to look desperately for the flawed gems in the mine tailings when somebody like yourself is courageous enough to do it for me ;p

Having been on both ends of the gatekeeper's desk (the metaphor kind of breaks down), it really is a different view from the other side. Personally, I've always enjoyed reading through submissions, even if they're awful. I can usually tell quickly whether it's awful, mediocre, promising, or even great, but even the bad stuff sometimes will have a tiny glimmer of something interesting in it, like one smooth facet in a flawed gem.

And I can steal it, and no one will know! (Kidding!)

Thank you John and John. :)

Apologies about the pricing error, but another job for editors is wielding that +3 Red Pencil of Coruscating Correction.

Well-said, Peadar! "Getting published" is not the same as it used to be...now that anyone can "publish" electronically. You make a terrific point about the New Gatekeepers...

Oh -- and Black Gate 14 costs $15.95, not fourteen bucks. So I tweaked that in your article, to ward off a riot over sudden price increases. :)
