Actually, I am well aware of that, and I was, in fact, generalizing (semi-humorously, I thought, but not wildly) about the anthology market, and not referring specifically to the latest from Van Gelder. The 33 1/3 is a perhaps lame joke referring to the speed of an LP (which stands for "long playing") record, which enabled sufficient analog waves on vinyl to convey an entire orchestral work on two sides of one disk, as opposed to a cumbersome series of 78s that had to be stacked together. Perhaps the joke is lost on those who aren't of a certain age.

However, I can understand how you could easily have gotten the impression I was referring to Van Gelder's latest edition of works culled from the history of F&SF, as in rereading the post I noted the lack of a closing parenthesis. I've fixed that typo, so perhaps that is more clear. It does seem to me that the whole notion of the "best of" is a cliche, if not one that I've enjoyed even as it seems to be a publishing workhorse. Personally, I'm more intrigued by collections such as the recent series edited by the VanderMeers that key off of some theme. Which, again, is not meant to knock all the 'best of" anthologies, which at least generate discussions about why someone else's idea of best isn't included.

Speaking of typos, Miggy, I assume you mean "by Gordon..." not "bu Gordon..."

Last time I checked this anthology was edited bu Gordon Van Gelder, not Gardner Dozois. Nor did it cover "the best gosh darn stories from the last 33 1/3 years, but the best stories published by one of the leading sf magazines for a whopping 60 years. If you're going to generalize wildly Soyka, at least get your facts straight. Please.
