Great analysis. This one always affected me about the same way, but I'd never managed to put my thoughts together on it. As a kid, the image of the Lord of the Nazgul, with his crown and burning eyes, was especially striking, and is forever etched in my memory.

Fantastic review. It gave me goosebumps several times. I can almost hear the orcs singing "Where there's a Whip" and feel them marching past.

I always thought the orcs looked more like hairless cats than frightening creatures, but with the music and animation, there were still some scary parts.

Thanks for helping me re-live this.

This animated version of RETURN OF THE KING was absolutely captivating to my 10-year-old self! Forevermore I would think of THESE goblins as the absolute model whenever I heard the word "goblin." How could there be any other look to a goblin than this? And the big battle at the end...wow...this, plus the Bakshi movie, were what motivated me to read LoTR for the first time at the age of 11. (I had already read THE HOBBIT at 8 or 9.)
Yep, THOSE are goblins. Real goblins.

Ditto - great review - gotta find these movies now. And come to think of it, they'll make a decent movie-fest for LOTR fans.
